Lessons From Opening Day

It's no secret that I'm a football mom. Today was opening day for my 6 year old's first football season. I was super excited for the game, but I had no idea how many lessons I would learn from today. As I took photos of this event, I found myself astounded at all that I could learn from my middle, and all the heart that he possesses.

First, a little background. The team that we were supposed to play today couldn't make it. So instead, that league's 10U team came in their place. In case anyone is confused, what that means is our 6, 7 and 8 year old boys were playing against 9 and 10 year old boys. When the other team came on the field, feelings of dread starting hitting the stomach of every parent from our team. These boys were BIG, and they looked like they were so much more together than our sweet little first and second year boys. But it was decided the show must go on, and go on it did.

Our boys lost. But they only gave up 10 points, and they fought like the warriors that they are. They never acted intimidated, and they never gave up. Let the lessons begin.

Before taking on a big task, take a deep breath and pray.

Stand by your friends, and pay attention to and support those who are in the game. You never know when you may learn something from someone who is in the same boat you're in.

Always be prepared to attempt something that you didn't originally set out to attempt. It may turn out to be something you're good at, and it may be a disaster, but you should always approach it with a positive attitude.

Have a mentor who knows what he/she is talking about. Always listen to that person. Always.

No matter how daunting the task, wherever you go, go with all of your heart. There's no such thing as trying too hard.

Sometimes life doesn't play fairly and tries to hold you back. Keep pushing.

There are few things in life more therapeutic than a genuine sweat, earned through great effort.

There are cheerleaders in the background. Appreciate them.

Always graciously accept congratulations, and be proud of your accomplishments.
