I Used To Eat That: Mechanically Separated Meats

Say hello to mechanically separated chicken. It’s what a lot of processed chicken products are made from — things like chicken nuggets and patties, cream of chicken soups, some frozen meatballs, hot dogs, slim jims, and tons more things....

Basically, the entire chicken is smashed and pressed through a sieve — bones, eyes, guts, and all. it comes out looking like this. According to the U.S.Food Safety and Inspection Service of the Department of Agriculture, mechanically separated meats are the real thing and are totally safe.

Very simply, mechanical separation is a way of getting every last piece of meat from the bone of a chicken, turkey, or other food animal. It's been a very common practice since the 1960's

There’s more: because it’s crawling with bacteria, it will be washed with ammonia. Then, because it tastes gross, it will be reflavored artificially. Then, because it is weirdly pink, it will be dyed with artificial color. This same process is used to create fast food burgers.
